On December 27, 1967 Doug Sax opened the doors to The Mastering Lab Hollywood, founding one of the first independent facilities in the world, as well as the most recognizable name in mastering. Now located in Ojai California, The Mastering Lab remains a revolutionary state-of-the-art company, utilizing unique concepts of signal flow and electronics pioneered by Doug's brother, Sherwood Sax. Indeed all of our custom-electronics from the tape machines to the equalizers, compressors / limiters, A/D - D/A converters, monitoring amplifiers, and console are all purpose designed and handcrafted. The musical use of this peerless equipment has earned The Mastering Lab more Grammy nominations for engineering than any other mastering facility.
Doug Sax, our legendary engineer, has crafted sounds for the icons of the music industry for over forty years. Helping to define the sound of all genres of popular and classical music, Doug has been awarded technical achievement and artistic Grammys, a Lifetime Honorary Membership in the Audio Engineering Society (AES), and has worked with legendary acts such as: Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, Ray Charles, The Eagles, Sheryl Crow, Barbra Streisand, Bette Midler, Neil Diamond, Rod Stewart, Earth, Wind and Fire, Tower of Power, Miles Davis, George Benson, Natalie Cole, Jackson Browne, Neil Young, James Taylor, Willie Nelson, George Strait, Lyle Lovett, Alison Krauss..... and the list goes on.

The biggest news at The Mastering Lab for 2010 is the opening of our new vinyl mastering room at our facility. After putting away our vinyl lathes ten years ago, we
have brought them back out and upgraded our award winning vinyl cutting system and returned to the very service with which we were founded and built our reputation: the creation of the very best sounding vinyl masters in the world. More than 200 million vinyl records have been pressed from our mastering lathes, and we have more records nominated for Engineering Grammy’s than any cutting system in the world!
